nothing of that sort is required, just that the firewall should not block the ports being used by the torrent client. different clients use different port ranges, so check yor client's documentation. two of the common ranges start from 49160 and 6881.
also, the firewall must allow the client to talk to the tracker and this happens through either port 80, which should not be any problem, or some specific port, which may have to be opened specially for this purpose. you can tell what port the tracker is running at by looking at the announce url. xboard's tracker runs on port 2710. another popular port for trackers is 6969.
